What is steeping?

The process of e-liquid steeping can be used to accentuate the liquid’s flavour signature and to bring out some of the more subtle flavour inclusions. Some e-liquid flavours, however, do not respond as well to steeping as do others. This is dependent on a number of variables, such as the emulsifying base of each flavor. Many e-liquid manufacturers steep their juices before they are even distributed. The decision to steep one’s e-liquids involves the consideration of the various steeping methods and what effect they might have on the final product.

Why steep e-liquid?

The flavour and appearance of most e liquids changes over time. Usually, they darken in colour and the flavour becomes stronger and more intense as they mature. This is caused by the ingredients in the liquid reacting with each other and with air.

So, if you receive a liquid that looks lighter and seems to have less flavour than a previous one it is probably a newer batch. A freshly mixed e liquid might be clear in colour and taste quite subtle. A few weeks later the same liquid might be considerably darker in colour and taste much stronger. The liquid isn’t actually ‘off’ until it is very, very dark.

Whar is raw e-juice?

Steeping is particularly important when you are dealing with raw e-liquid. Raw e-liquid is a just-mixed e-liquid that may have very little flavour.

Breathing e-liquid

This is when you take the cap off and let your e-liquid bottle sit for a few hours. We recpmmend no more than 12 hours of breathing e-juice. Eventually the flavour and nicotine content begins to diminish during this process so don’t forget about it! (Many people overgeneralize the term steeping to include this process but the truth is that “breathing” is not the same thing.)

Streathing e-liquid

Streathing is the process of testing your e-liquid to determine the perfect steeping time and is usually combined with a method such as warm bath steeping.

How to quickly steep e-liquid

A lot of vapers speed up the steeping of their liquids on purpose to maximise the flavour. This is very much a matter of experimenting to find what works best for each liquid and to suit your taste.

  • Time. The easiest way to steep a liquid is just to leave the lid of the bottle (the air helps) and give it time. Most people recommend leaving the bottle in a cool, dark place, but leaving it somewhere light (like a windowsill) will really speed up the process.
  • Heat. Putting a bottle of eliquid in a warm (not hot) water bath (like heating up a baby’s bottle) for a while can speed up the steeping process significantly. Make sure that the water isn’t too hot though, as heat can degrade nicotine.
  • Agitation.Shaking the liquid vigorously helps the ingredients blend.

Should you steep?

In conclusion, e-liquid flavor can be significantly improved through the process of steeping. A number of important factors must be considered, though, when deciding if and how to steep your juices. Are you using a complex, mixed flavour or a single, basic flavor? What is the VG/PG ratio of your e-liquid? Does the manufacturer pre-steep their juices before distribution? What is the nicotine content of your liquid (if any)? Do you have the time and budget necessary to steep juices over a period of days, weeks, or even months? We suggest experimenting over time with different methods, times, etc. You will find your preferred method and your vaping experience will most likely improve substantially.
