We all know the scenario: you are vaping on your favourite eLiquid, enjoying the sweet flavour ... And then suddenly - you can't taste it anymore! Or, even worse, you find that your tongue is a bit numb? After cleaning your tank, and switching out countless cartos/coils, the flavor still isn’t there. You ask yourself: what is going on?

That is what we call the vaper's tongue -  basically it's a  wide range of taste related conditions from going off a single individual flavour that you used to like to losing taste for all foods and drinks. While the first example is far more common, the second example is potentially more serious, with causes including dehydration, vitamin deficiency or illness. In most cases, though, the condition is temporary and soon resolves itself (although there are quite a few things you can do to speed up the return of your tastes buds!)

What causes vaper's tongue?

  • Vaping the same eLiquid flavour for too long.
  • Damaged taste buds. For whatever reason maybe you started smoking cigs again for some reason or you eat a lot of spicy foods anything that can damage your taste buds could then be then a possible cause for you not tasting your e-juice. Some other things that can damage your taste buds Stress has been proven to “change” your taste buds effect, even breathing through your mouth can alter your taste buds it can affect  your salivary glands and bacteria in your mouth.
  • Mouth drynessDry mouth is caused by a lack of saliva, and you’re likely to experience it from time to time (especially as you get older). Unfortunately, it can also lead to a loss of taste.
  • Dehydration: Dehydration can reak havoc on your taste buds. It can cause a white coating to develop on you tongue dulling their effect to work properly, Being dehydrated is a serious medical issue and you know the rule “if your thirsty then your already dehydrated “
  • Being ill: If you get sick then all of a sudden notice you can’t taste your e-juice then it’s probably safe to say that’s the cause, having a cold / flu can block your nose that is a very important tool is our sense of taste, Humans have specialized sensory cells in the nasal cavity called olfactory sensory neurons. These neurons give us our sense of smell. If you’re stopped up due to a cold, it impedes those senses and you aren’t able to smell or taste as well.
  • Other possible illnesses, such as injury to the mouth, nose, or head, gum inflammation (such as gingivitis or periodontal disease), Sjogren’s syndrome (an autoimmune disease that causes dry mouth and dry eyes), vitamin B12 or zinc deficiency or disorders of the nervous system can also be one reason to have a loss in taste.
  • Medicines:  A number of medicines can also lead to a loss of taste (thyroid drugs, captopril, griseofulvin, lithium, penicillamine, procarbazine, rifampin and some cancer drugs). If you have vaper’s tongue and are taking one of these drugs, that might just be the reasons.
How to cure vaper's tongue?
  • Change your eLiquid flavour and / or its strentgh
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Inhaling the smell of fresh coffee beans (this is a technique used by professional wine tasters and perfume samplers - believe that inhaling the scent of fresh coffee beans “resets” your sense of taste)
  • Sucking on a lemon (like coffee beans, this is supposed to reset your taste buds).
  • Proper dental hygiene
  • End dual vaping
  • Give it time - damaged taste buds can take up to two weks to recover
